With New Year’s Eve festivities getting started in Vancouver Tuesday night, you might notice a few extra police officers on the streets.

The Vancouver Police Department says it will be out in force in the city’s busier areas.

“We will have extra officers deployed tonight through all the areas in the city where there will be a bigger population of people, whether it be the Granville Entertainment District, Gastown, and Yaletown,” said Const. Tania Visintin.

She says approximately 100 extra VPD officers will be deployed to make sure everyone has a safe celebration in addition to a happy New Year.

“If you’re going to celebrate tonight, do so safely and responsibly, and have a dedicated driver,” said Visintin.

“Anytime we do have large crowds coming into the city, whether it be for New Year’s Eve, for fireworks, Halloween, or St. Patrick’s Day, we always anticipate there will be issues. It is a given. That’s why we’re going to have extra officers deployed.”

Police are encouraging Vancouverites to take advantage of transit or rideshare options to ensure a safe ride home.
