Two people are in hospital after an apartment fire in Seaton Village early Thursday morning.

Toronto Fire was called to Barton Avenue near Bathurst Street around 3:15 for a two-alarm blaze on the second floor of a low-rise apartment building.

Crews rescued two elderly people from inside the unit. They were taken to hospital in serious, but stable condition.

The fire has been knocked down but smoke is still being cleared from the building.

Two pets are also now in the care of police after being rescued by firefighters.

Investigators say it appears to be a kitchen fire that got out of control, but the exact cause has not yet been determined.
