personal fireworks are not allowed

As Halloween and Diwali celebrations kick off across Metro Vancouver, police are out with a reminder that personal fireworks are not allowed.

Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey, and Port Coquitlam are among the cities that require a permit for the sale and use of fireworks.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services public information officer Matthew Trudeau says members of the public should never use fireworks under any circumstances.

“[There has been] one injury today, related to fireworks already, and it could be serious in nature,” Trudeau said.

“The reminder, really, is that these are explosive devices, they should be taken very seriously, and they’re only to be used by trained, licensed professionals, operating with a permit in the city.”

Bylaw officers and firefighters in the region increased patrols Thursday evening, with fines for fireworks violations varying city-to-city. Surrey has recently increased its minimum fine from $100 to $400. The maximum has been raised from $5,000 to $50,000.

“The call volume had gone up substantially, and this is our effort, and with the support of Mayor and council, they approved this unanimously,” said City of Surrey director of bylaws Jas Johal.

“And with their support, it is an effort to curb this problem.”

Last year in Surrey, bylaw officers visited about 500 locations on Oct. 31 and issued more than 150 tickets.

“My efforts here are to educate the community and let them know to behave and act in a responsible manner and not engage in any reckless behavior that jeopardizes your safety and your neighbours’ safety,” Johal said.

Families are also being urged to be safe while trick-or-treatreating. Police departments say it’s a good idea to have a bright or reflective costume or carry a flashlight or glow stick.
