Crews battle house fire in Surrey’s Port Kells area Friday
The Surrey Fire Service made short work of a house fire in the city’s Port Kells area Friday, extinguishing the flames within two hours.
Emergency crews responded to a call in the area of 92nd Avenue and 189th Street around 9 p.m. When they arrived they found the home — a single-story house with a basement — on fire with grey smoke coming out of the front.
“Crews immediately confined the fire from the outside and made an interior attack, putting out the fire,” Assistant Fire Chief Greg McRobbie told 1130 NewsRadio.
The house did not appear to be inhabited, he says.
McRobbie says there was no hydrant near the home, so the fire service needed to dispatch five water shuttle vehicles.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but foul play is not suspected.
“Police were on scene last night, and they didn’t hold the scene,” McRobbie said.
“Usually if they hold the scene, that indicates that they want to keep continuity of evidence for an investigation, which they didn’t do. So most likely a normal investigation will happen on Monday from a fire inspection side.”
No injuries have been reported.
