The Abbotsford Police Department says it is investigating a suspicious death after human remains were found in a burning vehicle in Sumas Mountain Regional Park.

Officers were called out to the park shortly before 3 p.m. Friday, where they found a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander that had been set on fire.

After fire crews extinguished the blaze, officers found human remains inside the vehicle.

“The Abbotsford Police Major Crime Unit is in the preliminary stages of the investigation working with the BC Coroners’ Service to identify the remains in the vehicle,” the AbbyPD said.

“Additional resources are being deployed to assist in this complex investigation.”

The investigation has been turned over to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

Sumas Mountain Regional Park is closed to the public while investigators gather evidence.

Anyone with information about the incident or who was in the area on Friday and saw the vehicle and may have dash cam footage is asked to call the IHIT Infoline at 1-877-551-4448.
