Evacuation order for six Deep Cove properties has been lifted

An evacuation order for six properties in North Vancouver’s Deep Cove neighbourhood has been lifted.

Residents along Panorama Drive were told Sunday night their properties were under a mandatory evacuation order as the District of North Vancouver (DNV) declared a state of local emergency following heavy rain over the weekend.

“Due to impacts caused by extreme rainfall, a state of local emergency order that resulted in the mandatory evacuations came after inspections by qualified professionals during the morning of October 20 found that potential failure of private infrastructure was deemed to create a risk to public safety,” the DNV said in a news release Thursday.

“The decision to lift the order comes after District crews have worked over the past few days to complete construction work remediating hazards resulting from the extreme rainfall event.”

The DNV says the work included restoring downstream creek drainage to the Indian Arm fjord.

“Homeowners have been advised that hazards may be present on their property, and we have encouraged them to undertake their own due diligence on their properties,” the district said.

The North Shore became overwhelmed with rain and floodwater as an atmospheric river weather event passed over coastal B.C. over the weekend. Videos posted to social media showed Deep Cove and other parts of North Vancouver with flooded streets, homes, and businesses.

District of North Vancouver Mayor Mike Little told 1130 NewsRadio over the weekend that crews worked in advance to clear storm drains, but the amount of rainfall exceeded predictions.

Rainfall across the region broke records during the storm, with several other areas also seeing flooding.
