One person is left with serious injures following a fire in a Vancouver apartment building Sunday morning.

Fire crews say they were called to a three-storey residential building on Nanaimo Street near East 45th Ave just after 6 a.m., where they saw smoke coming from a unit on the top floor.

“Firefighters quickly made entry into the building to contain the fire to an individual suite, preventing further fire damage to the building,” said Vancouver Fire Rescue Captain Matthew Truedeau.

“Firefighters assisted occupants with evacuation but unfortunately one person was found in the fire unit in serious condition. Crews provided medical aid on scene.”

The person was then taken to hospital.

The housing provider remained on scene to assist residents dealing with smoke or water damage.

“An urgent reminder about always having a working smoke alarm outside each sleeping area and on each level,” Trudeau said. “Working smoke alarms saves lives.”

The fire cause remains under investigation at this time.
