Parts of the GTA expecting up to 10 cm of snow this weekend
A barrage of winter weather is expected to make its way to Toronto and parts of the GTA this weekend, with the possibility of up to 10 centimetres of snow.
The snowfall began Friday evening and was expected to ease up around 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Pearson International Airport says it received approximately 8 cm overnight but added that the accumulation was not expected to impact operations.
Milder conditions are in the forecast for the rest of the weekend with daytime highs of 1 C on Saturday and -1 C on Sunday.
The City of Toronto has opened five of its warming centres and will activate two additional facilities if temperatures drop below -15 C.
A winter weather travel advisory is still in effect for a small portion of eastern Ontario. The national weather agency says travel along Highway 401 may be hazardous at times.
“Motorists should expect hazardous winter driving conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly,” the alert says. “Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.”
