A machinery fire at Westshore Terminal in Delta Saturday morning has been extinguished, the Port of Vancouver has confirmed to 1130 NewsRadio.

“Westshore Terminal alerted the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority that a coal stacker had caught fire,” port spokesperson Arpen Rana said.

“Delta Fire responded to the incident immediately.”

Fire crews remain on scene to monitor the site.

No injuries have been reported.

“Both Westshore Terminal and GCT’s Deltaport have temporarily shut down operations,” Rana said.

“Westshore is continuing to manage the response with Delta Fire.”

Rana says terminals at the Port of Vancouver are operated by independent companies.

Photos and video shared with us show a thick, black plume of smoke coming from the terminal.

Julie Hobart witnessed the smoke and says she saw what appeared to be a massive dark cloud blowing for several hundred metres.

“It was huge, just completely black, going right down the causeway where the coal port is,” she said. “The size of this was incredible.”

Hobart says fire engines appeared about an hour after she first saw the smoke.

Kyle Huggins was waiting at the ferry terminal — which is adjacent to the terminal — when he saw the smoke. Huggins shared photos and video with us.
