Vancouver police have confirmed a crash involving a motorcycle that closed a Kitsilano intersection for hours Tuesday night was fatal.

In an update Wednesday afternoon, the Vancouver Police Department says it believes the riders of a Suzuki motorcycle were heading west on Cornwall when they collided with an SUV near Balsam Street in Vancouver around 4:30 p.m.

The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) says seven ambulances responded to the scene of the crash.

“The 44-year-old driver of the motorcycle died at the collision scene. A female passenger on the bike was seriously injured and taken to hospital in critical condition,” said the VPD.

The intersection remained closed for several hours and has since been reopened. Police say the passenger remains in hospital with “life-threatening injuries,” while the driver of the SUV was “not seriously injured.”

Witnesses, or anyone with dashcam footage of the incident, are asked to call the VPD’s Collision Investigation Unit at 604-717-3012.
