100-year-old Chilliwack house damaged in fire Saturday

Twenty-five members of the Chilliwack Fire Department were busy early Saturday morning knocking down a blaze at a 100-year-old house in the Margaret Avenue area.
When they got to the home — located on Princess Avenue near Young Road — around 1 a.m., they found the fire in the basement.
Assistant Chief Chris Wilson says the blaze extended inside through the walls all the way up to the attic.
“Through the use of ventilation tactics and an offensive fire attack, crews were able to locate and extinguish the fire,” Wilson said in a news release issued on Saturday.
“Despite effective tactics, the home suffered heavy, fire, smoke and water damage due to its older construction, which allowed for the fire to travel unimpeded through the wall structures.”
Nobody was home at the time of the blaze and no injuries have been reported.
The fire is now under investigation.
