12 people in hospital following downtown highrise fire

Multiple people have been transported to hospital with unknown injuries after fire crews responded to a 3 alarm high-rise fire on Bleeker street in Cabbagetown.

Police say they evacuated the building as the fire happened on the sixth floor of a high-rise building near Sherbourne street and Wellesley street.

Out of the 12 people taken to hospital, seven are residents and five are police officers who were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Investigators say there was heavy smoke in the building when the fire happened at approximately 10:40 a.m.

Police say the fire has been put out around 2 p.m. but roads remain closed in the area.
