18-year-old arrested with knife at school
A New Westminster Secondary student was arrested Thursday after allegedly bringing a knife to school.
The New Westminster Police Department says it responded to reports of a student with a knife, making comments that “caused [the caller] concern for the safety of students and staff.”
Police say a student was standing in a hallway holding a knife when officers arrived.
“Officers provided verbal de-escalation techniques in the hopes the suspect could be safely taken into custody, however, the suspect did not comply,” the NWPD explained.
Police used an ARWEN weapon loaded with a less-than-lethal projectile on the student, an 18-year-old girl, who was then taken into custody.
The NWPD says the knife was seized and the suspect “sustained non life-threatening injuries that are being assessed at a local area hospital.”
The department is offering witnesses support via the Victim Assistance Unit. Those seeking support can call 604-529-2525 or email VAU@nwpolice.org.
