20 B.C. ministries now ‘fully struck’: public sector union

Workers at all remaining B.C. adult correctional facilities walked off the job Friday as a strike by public sector workers approaches its seventh week.

The BC General Employees’ Union says 20 ministries and government services are “fully struck,” and nearly 25,000 workers are involved in the job action.

Union President Paul Finch says the decision to escalate is never taken lightly.

“The path to resolution lies with the government. Talks have stalled not because of our unwillingness to negotiate, but due to their lack of urgency and meaningful engagement,” said Finch in a statement Friday.

The union says more disruptions are expected in the days ahead.

“The BCGEU continues to maintain essential service levels where required by law but warns the government and public that further escalation is possible if the government continues to delay a fair deal.”

The Leader Spirit has reached out to the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General for more information about which correctional services will be affected.
