5-ft-long boa constrictor found on Vancouver Island
B.C.’s Conservation Officer Service (COS) says it has safely captured a five-foot-long boa constrictor on Vancouver Island near Comox.
The service says some trails in Miracle Beach Provincial Park were closed after it was told about a large snake on the loose on Thursday. The animal was captured around 1 p.m.
“Due to its length, the boa constrictor was determined to be a restricted reptile under the Controlled Alien Species (CAS) regulation, which means that while a permit is not required to own it, they cannot be released under any circumstances,” the COS said.
“CO’s are investigating the circumstances of this incident, which may result in enforcement action.”

According to the COS, Controlled Alien Species are not native to B.C. and aren’t considered wildlife.
Another boa constrictor was recently seen on the loose in Tofino’s Chesterman Beach, but the COS says it doesn’t believe the two incidents are related.
The service says this isn’t the first time it has seized exotic animals.
“Over the last 10+ years, officers have captured lions, alligators, and monkeys,” it said. “COs receive special training to handle the variety of reptiles and exotic animals that fall under CAS.”
