Seven people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at the Value Lodge Motel in Nanaimo early Friday morning, BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) tells 1130 NewsRadio.

Emergency crews were called to the hotel, located on Nicol Street near Woodhouse shortly before 3 a.m.

“Six ambulances responded to the scene,” BCEHS said.

“Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment and transported seven patients to hospital for smoke inhalation.”

On its website, the hotel says its doors are closed indefinitely while they assess the damage.

“Our thoughts and deepest concerns are first and foremost with our guests who were staying with us at the time,” it said.

“We are devastated that you have been displaced, and we are working closely with local authorities and relief organizations to ensure everyone’s safety and support.”

It goes on to thank first responders for their help.

We have reached out to the fire department and the City of Nanaimo for more information.
