A damaged truck sits idle on Highway 1

The BC Highway Patrol says the driver of a truck carrying a modular home that struck an overpass on Highway 1 in Abbotsford on Friday is now facing charges.

The incident happened just before 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 when the commercial semi-trailer was driving west in the left-hand lane when it struck the No. 3 Road overpass.

“BC Highway Patrol officers made sure that everyone was safe and, after investigating the circumstances of the crash, laid a charge of drive without due care and attention on the driver of the semi-trailer,” said Corp. Michael McLaughlin.

“We understand how frustrating these incidents are for road users, and BCHP is going to help make sure drivers are held accountable for their decisions on the road.”

The incident left pieces of the pre-fabricated home strewn across the highway.

George from Maple Ridge called 1130 NewsRadio on Friday to describe the crash he witnessed shortly after it happened.

“I’m getting off at the No. 3, and just before it, I notice this great big dust ‘poof’ thing,” said George.

Wood and insulation, George says, covered the road after the strike.

The province has documented 23 other overpass strikes this year.

The driver is now facing a drive without due care and attention, section 144(1)(a) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act, coming with a fine of $368 and six points against their licence.
