raccoon sightings on the rise

‘Tis the season for some furry friends to make an appearance on your patio or in your backyard, and a local wildlife society is out with a warning as raccoon sightings are on the rise.

This time of year, it isn’t uncommon to see more of the critters around Vancouver, and many posts on social media show they have been spotted near homes and in public spaces such as SkyTrain stations.

Emma Robson, junior wildlife supervisor at Critter Care Wildlife Society, says it is not surprising they’re coming around more.

“With the colder months, they do thermoregulate, but for them, it’s a lot easier to keep their body temperature up in the winter if they’re near a house,” Robson said.

“So it’s not uncommon people will see them sleeping on rooms or on patio furniture throughout the day when it’s a bit colder out, and then they’ll go on at night and forage for food at that time.”

She says it’s important to try to peacefully coexist with local wildlife, especially when their food sources aren’t as plentiful.

“So just make sure you’re staying back and giving them as much space as you can in each situation,” she said.

Anyone who may come across a raccoon that appears to be sick or injured is encouraged to contact the society.
