Five people are in hospital and Lougheed Highway remains closed Thursday afternoon after a serious crash near Mission.

Callers to 1130 NewsRadio first reported the crash around 11:30 a.m.

The Mission RCMP says early indications suggest that one driver hydroplaned and struck another vehicle in the oncoming lane.

“A female was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service is investigating the collision.”

The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) tells 1130 NewsRadio that seven ambulances attended the scene, and four other victims were also taken to hospital.

“Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment five patients at the scene and transported five patients hospital,” authorities said in a statment.

PHSA declined to provide details about the other victims.

Lougheed Highway is closed in both directions between Nelson and Oliver street.

Non-commercial drivers can take Silverdale Avenue to avoid the closure. Heavy congestion can be expected.
