Police in Surrey are investigating after a disturbing video of a fight that broke out Thursday was posted online.

The video shows a group of young men approaching a man sitting at a table inside a fast-food restaurant in the Sullivan Heights neighbourhood.

One of the members of the group can be seen picking up a chair and hitting the victim with it several times while yelling.

Surrey Police Service spokesman Ian MacDonald says the victim suffered some facial bruising and a black eye but never contacted police.

“In fact, we had to make some efforts to locate that individual,” MacDonald explained.

What led to the fight, he says, is still under investigation.

“As far as the youth are concerned, many of them, both witnesses and the parties involved, have been interviewed, and parents have been engaged, and we are working collaboratively with the school district at this point,” said MacDonald.

He says the behaviour shown in the video is something everybody would condemn as unacceptable.

“Fortunately, it is a rare incident. We don’t receive reports — we don’t see videos like this very often.”
