Rainfall warning issued for parts of Metro Vancouver

A rainfall warning has been issued for several communities around Metro Vancouver.

According to Environment Canada, the warning applies to the North Shore, the northeast part of the Lower Mainland — including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge — and communities near Howe Sound.

“A series of moderate rainfall systems are arriving from today to Sunday. Each day will receive approximately 20 to 50 mm of rainfall accumulations,” the weather service said Friday.

“The highest amounts are expected on Saturday.”

Accumulation may reach 100 mm by the end of the weekend, Environment Canada says.

Meanwhile, the B.C. River Forecast Centre has issued a high streamflow advisory for the South Coast, the Lower Fraser area, and parts of Vancouver Island, due to the rainfall in combination with warmer weather.

“Runoff from rainfall and additional snowmelt is expected to lead to periods of high streamflow through the weekend and Tuesday, particularly from mountainous watersheds in the region,” the centre said.

“Significant flooding is not anticipated, however, localized issues are possible.”

High streamflow advisories are issued when river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly with no major flooding expected.
