One person is in hospital after being shot by police in Burnaby Monday afternoon.

The BC RCMP says it has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) after the incident around 3 p.m.

The Burnaby RCMP responded to call of a domestic dispute at a home on Dundas Street near Maddison Avenue.

“When the responding officer arrived, they located a suspect with an edged weapon. An interaction occurred and shots were fired by police,” Mounties explained Tuesday.

The victim was taken to hospital in serious condition from gunshot wounds.

Police say no one else was injured.

The IIO is called in after any police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.

“The IIO BC was notified and are attending the scene to investigate police actions in this incident. The area has been cordoned off in order to support the investigation.”

The Burnaby RCMP says it is investigating the circumstances that led to the initial call for service.
