B.C. child files lawsuit against Roblox
A Kamloops child is suing the online video game platform Roblox, alleging it’s designed to be addictive to minors, putting their physical and mental well-being at risk.
The plaintiff, identified only as 12-year-old D.J., began playing games hosted by the platform at around five years old.
“Since then, the plaintiff has played Roblox for approximately two hours per day and has spent approximately $300 to $500 purchasing the virtual currency ‘Robux’ in-game,” the lawsuit alleges.
D.J. and guardian G.J. filed a class-action lawsuit against the Roblox Corporation last week, seeking damages for anyone who claims to have become addicted to the game, or minors who purchased ‘Robux’ or paid for a premium membership.
They allege the game includes harmful design elements, makes microtransactions too easy, promotes chance-based merchandising, and much more.
“Minors are especially susceptible to harmful design elements and, as a result, are at a higher risk of developing addictive gaming behaviours,” said the notice of civil claim.
It claims the consequences of harmful gaming exposure in kids include impaired cognitive functions, loss of control and inhibition and social and behavioural issues.
The suit’s allegations have not been tested in court.
The B.C. Supreme Court has yet to certify the suit, which would force the corporation to respond.
