A 71-year-old woman from Chilliwack has died after a vehicle struck a hydro pole and entered the Fraser River.

The Upper Fraser Valley RCMP say the incident happened around 2:40 p.m. on Friday on Ballam Road.

Two people were inside the 2001 green Audi sedan before it went into the water.

Police say bystanders rescued both people from the submerged vehicle and administered CPR until emergency personnel arrived.

According to BC Emergency Health Services, one air ambulance helicopter was dispatched.

“Paramedics transported two patients to the hospital, one in stable condition and one in critical condition,” the BC Emergency Health Services said.

Mounties are investigating the cause of the collision and are asking anyone who has witnessed the incident or observed the vehicle’s driving behaviour to contact police.
