New Costco location causes traffic on Queensborough Bridge

The traffic caused by a new location of the warehouse retail chain Costco in New Westminster is drawing criticism online.

The Costco Business Centre opened on Friday near Boyd Street and Howe Street in the city’s Queensborough neighborhood.

Ever since it opened, the traffic on the Queensborough Bridge has increased significantly.

Many residents reported standstills on roads and blocked intersections by drivers on their way to the warehouse retailer.

Residents say that the traffic has impacted their daily commute to and from work.

“I honestly felt like a hostage in my own home this weekend. The idea of leaving to go in either direction gave me anxiety,” said one Reddit user who lives in the Port Royal area.

“I will avoid this area as much as possible for the next month or so,” said another.

Social media users also criticize that the infrastructure in that area was not upgraded with the expected traffic increase.

“They should’ve never allowed it to open there without expanding the Queensborough Bridge,” one Reddit user wrote.

A Costco Business Centre targets business, offering commercial-grade equipment and larger-sized products than a regular Costco Wholesale offers.

While a Business Centre does not have a food court and clothing section, it is open to any other Costco member.
