B.C.’s first baby in 2026 was born in Kelowna General Hospital

The British Columbia government says the province’s first baby of 2026 was born in Kelowna General Hospital at 12:18 a.m., but won’t release other details.

A post on social media says the baby was born weighing six pounds, eight ounces, but a spokesperson for Interior Health says it cannot provide any more details, such as the child’s biological sex or name, because the parents did not provide their consent.

A spokesperson for Fraser Health says the first baby in the region was born at 12:53 a.m. at Ridge Meadows Hospital, with additional details said to be released later. 

Vancouver Coastal Health says baby boy Suzuki was the first baby born in that health region, arriving at 1:30 a.m. in the Richmond Birth Centre to parents Haruna and Jian Suzuki, and weighing seven pounds, eleven ounces.

Northern Health says the first baby in northern British Columbia was a baby girl, Molina, who was born at 2:25 a.m. at Ksyen Regional Hospital in Terrace, weighing seven pounds and nine ounces, to parents Chantel Johnson and Robert Good.

Island Health says the first baby born on Vancouver Island in 2026 was baby boy Sahit Prata, who weighed three pounds and one ounce when he arrived at Victoria General Hospital at 3:48 a.m.
