Burnaby RCMP confirms truck didn’t hit overpass on Jan. 11
Mounties in Burnaby say they have confirmed a large truck did not hit an overpass on Highway 1 last Thursday, despite images and footage suggesting that was the case.
Videos of a truck carrying an oversized load stopped under the Gilmore overpass were shared online on Jan. 11, with some questioning whether the cargo was touching the infrastructure.
However, in an update Tuesday, the Burnaby RCMP says it has since spoken to the driver and confirmed “the overpass had not been struck.”
“While there were no complaints or reports received, a video of a commercial vehicle potentially striking an overpass on [Highway] 1 was posted to social media on Thursday, January 11, 2023,” the RCMP said in an email Jan. 16.
“It was not initially clear whether the overpass was struck or not. Burnaby RCMP opened an investigation and attended the scene, however; the commercial vehicle was no longer in the area.”
The RCMP says there was no damage seen on the overpass where the truck was stopped.
After speaking with the driver, Mounties say their investigation has concluded.
The update comes a day after the same overpass was hit by a different truck carrying an oversized load. In this latest case, the Ministry of Transportation says the carrier has been suspended pending an investigation.
