B.C. health: Primary care update

We’re set to get an update from the B.C. government about how it is working to improve access to primary health care in the province.

Health Minister Adrian Dix is scheduled to speak with reporters at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Addressing health-care concerns has been a challenge, particularly after the pandemic, which put even more of a spotlight on the shortage of family doctors and other health professionals.

Friday’s news conference comes almost a year after the province launched a new payment model for family doctors, meant to address the critical shortage of general practitioners in B.C.

In December of 2022, doctors ratified a $708-million deal with the province.

So far, 4,000 family doctors have enrolled in the new model — 500 of whom are new.
