Additional charges laid in York Region rock-throwing incidents

A rock that was thrown at a vehicle in Markham.

More charges have been laid against two teenagers in multiple rock-throwing incidents in Markham and Whitchurch-Stouffville.

An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were arrested on Jan. 28 and were initially facing only three charges combined.

After further investigation, police allege they are responsible for multiple rock-throwing incidents dating back to July of 2024.

The 17-year-old is now facing 18 charges of mischief under $5,000 and assault with a weapon while the 18-year-old is facing 13 charges of mischief under $5,000.

The extra five charges the 17-year-old is facing are in connection to incidents from 2024. The other 13 charges are in relation to incidents on January 26, 2025.

On Jan. 26, York police say there were five incidents of rocks being throw at parked vehicles and nine incidents of rocks being thrown at residences.

Another incident of a rock being thrown at a parked vehicle at Dec. 1, 2024. There were also four rock-throwing incidents where they were thrown at moving vehicles.

They cannot be identified per the Youth Criminal Justice Act because both accused were youths at the time of the alleged offences.

The investigation is still ongoing.

OPP are also still investigating several incidents of rock-throwing including one incident in which two people suffered life-threatening injuries after an object struck their vehicle, leading to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 48 near Major Mackenzie Drive.
