Alberta man seriously injured, Highway 1 reopens after crash in Chilliwack

Highway 1 in Chilliwack has reopened after a serious crash sent one person to hospital and shut down eastbound lanes Wednesday.

BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) says the crash, between the drivers of two pickup trucks, happened around 3:30 p.m. near the Yale Road exit.

“Due to the speed of the collision, both vehicles rolled into a deep ditch at the side of the highway,” Mounties explained Thursday.

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) says one person was airlifted to the hospital in serious condition.

Police have identified the drivers as an 18-year-old Chilliwack man, who was driving a white Toyota Tacoma and suffered only minor injuries, and an elderly Alberta man, who was driving a black GMC Sierra and suffered serious, potentially “life-altering” injuries.

Investigators had a portion of the road closed for nearly eight hours.

DriveBC announced that the eastbound lanes had cleared just before 11:20 p.m.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed or has dashcam footage of the events leading up to the crash to call BC Highway Patrol’s Chilliwack division at 604-702-4039 and quote file (1501) 2025-37881.
