An alleged carjacking at the Canada-U.S. border at Blaine, WA, resulted in a stolen B.C. truck being chased down the I-5 Highway Thursday afternoon, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) says.

In a post on X, WSP Trooper Kelsey Harding says they were told of a carjacking involving a knife around 1:30 p.m. Harding says a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officer was nearly hit by a truck registered as stolen in B.C.

Captain Deion Glover tells 1130 NewsRadio the WSP was told the driver of the car committed an armed carjacking in Canada. He says the driver drove off after being directed to a secondary screening.

“For whatever reason, the Border Patrol wanted to talk to them, and then they continued through the border
illegally,” he said.

“During the secondary screening area, the suspect continued into the United States.”

The CBP initiated a chase southbound.

“WSP Troopers observed the vehicle failing to yield for the marked CBP units as it entered Bellingham,” Harding said in her post.

“CBP air assets were deployed and assisted with the pursuit. Troopers observed reckless driving behavior and took over the pursuit for the crime of felony eluding.”

She says stop sticks were used to try to end the chase, but this was unsuccessful.

“A PIT maneuver was utilized to bring the vehicle to stop and, with assistance from Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office and CBP, the driver was taken into custody,” she said.

“Troopers recovered a machete, and the vehicle was identified signed stolen from British Columbia.”

Deion says the suspect was not hurt in the pursuit.

“The suspect was cleared from the hospital from any injuries and booked into jail here in the United States on a variety of charges,” he said.

Editor’s note: an earlier version of this story said a Canadian Border Patrol officer was nearly hit by the truck. However, it was a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer who was nearly hit. As well, it was U.S. Customs and Border Protection that initiated the chase.
