At least 18 homes damaged, residents displaced in Richmond fire
Two people are in hospital, and several more have been displaced after a fire in Richmond’s Steveston area Tuesday night.
Richmond Fire-Rescue responded to reports of a condo building on fire on Seventh Avenue near Steveston Highway just before 8 p.m.
Chief Jim Wishlove says crews arrived to find flames coming from a 3rd-floor suite. Firefighters evacuated the building and began to tackle the fire.
Images from the scene show the crews fighting the enormous blaze coming out of the building’s roof.
Wishlove estimated approximately 18 units were damaged by fire, smoke, or water. He says the residents will not be able to return to their homes until they’re assessed.
He says Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services crews were standing by in Richmond fire halls while nearly all Richmond units attended the Seventh Avenue fire.
Wishlove thanks the VFRS and Richmond community members for their support.
BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) says paramedics treated two people at the scene, who were then taken to hospital in stable condition.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
