Atmospheric river brings record rainfall over Lower Mainland
Another atmospheric river over B.C.’s south coast broke several daily weather records across the Lower Mainland and Squamish Monday.
1130 NewsRadio Meteorologist Michael Kuss says rain that began on Saturday brought totals ranging from 40 millimetres to 150 millimetres at stations across the region.
For the date of Jan. 12, rainfall records broken in the Fraser Valley include 49.6 millimetres in Abbotsford, 89.5 millimetres in Agassiz, and 86.1 millimetres in Hope.
To the north, West Vancouver saw a new daily record of 50.9 millimetres, while 98.5 millimetres soaked Squamish.
Kuss says the rain has been accompanied by unusually warm temperatures. Early forecasts predict Tuesday could break the following daily temperature records:
- 13.4 degrees at Vancouver International Airport, set in 2010
- 14.6 degrees in Abbotsford, set in 1986
- 14.6 degrees in White Rock, set in 2022
Kuss guarantees his daily high-temperature forecasts for Vancouver as part of the 1130 NewsRadio Weather Guarantee contest.
The jackpot goes up by $100 each weekday that he gets the Guaranteed High right. If he misses the high for the day by more than 2 degrees Celsius, the jackpot can be won.
