B.C. Crown lawyer assaulted on way to Vancouver court: BCPS

The BC Prosecution Service says a Crown Counsel was assaulted in a seemingly “random” incident in Vancouver Friday.

The service says the incident happened at around 9 a.m. while the attorney was “on their way to work at the provincial courthouse at 222 Main Street.”

The BCPS could not provide additional details, noting this was now “an active police investigation.”

Vancouver police confirmed to The Canadian Press that it was looking into the incident, as well as another reported assault, which also happened near Hastings and Columbia street.

While the VPD said its investigation was in its early stages, it noted police don’t believe the suspect and victims knew each other.

B.C. premier ‘profoundly disturbed’ by report

Meanwhile, B.C. Premier David Eby says he was “profoundly disturbed” to hear a prosecutor had been assaulted.

Speaking at an unrelated news conference Friday afternoon, Eby said he was told the woman is receiving medical care.

The premier explained that in order for the justice system to work, everyone who keeps it running must be kept safe while they’re on the job.

He added that he was reaching out to B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma to look at what the province can to do to “increase safety.”
