The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO BC) has been called in after a fatal incident in Sechelt early Saturday morning.

The province’s police watchdog says officers were called to a home on Oldmill Lane near Delta Road just after 3:30 a.m. after a report of a man in distress with an edged weapon.

“Sunshine Coast RCMP arrived on scene and located the man nearby,” said Sgt. Vanessa Munn.

“Upon making contact, the man fled back into a residence and was pursued by officers. There were other people, including children, inside the house. Police maintained contact with the man who was allegedly holding an edged weapon as they worked to de-escalate the situation.”

The IIO says the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team was then called in.

Just after 10:30 a.m., an “interaction” occurred inside the home, and shots were fired by police, IIO BC says.

BC Emergency Health Services (BC EHS) was called in to provide medical care to the man, but he died at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

IIO BC is called in after any police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.
