The B.C. government announced Thursday that it will invest more than $88 million to double the capacity of a Surrey high school.

Speaking from Clayton Heights Secondary School on 188 Street, Premier David Eby said expansions will lead to 1,000 new student seats.

Plans include new science and technology spaces, a new dance studio, a modern gym, upgraded art facilities, and a new Indigenous space.

“This expansion at Clayton Heights Secondary adds vital classroom space, reflecting the Province’s broader commitment to build schools in Surrey and support the city’s long-term growth,” said a provincial media release.

Eby says his government is “playing catch-up” to previous administrations that decided not to build schools in growing communities, and to a federal immigration program that “disregarded our ability to keep up with critical infrastructure like schools and housing.”

He says work is underway to deliver approximately 6,000 more student spaces across Surrey, including using prefabricated additions.

The province did not provide a timeline for the Clayton Heights Secondary project’s completion.
