Homicide investigators have released the identity of a man who was discovered dying of gunshot wounds on a Surrey street Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly after 12 p.m., the Surrey Police Service (SPS) responded to reports of a man lying near a property on 176 Street just north of Grandview Heights.

When officers arrived, they found the injured man. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) arrived shortly after and has since taken over the investigation.

Hoping to progress its investigation Wednesday, IHIT identified the victim as 46-year-old Baljinder “Binder” Singh Garcha of Surrey.

Garcha was a well-known member of the business community in Surrey and owned a wedding photography business, as well as a limousine service and banquet hall.

“Based on initial investigative steps, investigators do not believe there is a connection to the BC Gang Conflict and are working diligently to understand the circumstances that led to the death of Mr. Garcha,” said Media Relations Officer Sukhi Dhesi.

“We are asking anyone with information to please come forward and speak with investigators.”

Police also discovered a burning vehicle nearby on 40 Avenue near 192 Street Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses to suspicious behaviour or anyone with CCTV or dashcam video of the two areas between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. is asked to call investigators at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448).

IHIT representatives are expected to hold a media event at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday to provide updates about its most recent deployments in Abbotsford and Surrey.
