BC Conservatives leading in majority of 10 Surrey ridings

The majority of the electoral districts in Surrey appear to be swinging in favour of the BC Conservatives, reversing an NDP stronghold since the 2020 provincial election.

Surrey-Guildford, Surrey North, Surrey-Panorama, Surrey-Serpentine River, Surrey South, and Surrey-White Rock have all seen major gains for the BC Conservatives.

It’s still a close race in Surrey City Centre, where BC NDP candidate Amna Shah and Conservative Zeeshan Wahla battle it out.

Jagrup Brar is holding an early lead for the BC NDP in Surrey-Fleetwood.

In Surrey-Newton BC NDP candidate Jessie Sunner is also leading.

Since defecting from BC United to the BC Conservatives, Surrey South MLA Elenore Sturko is still battling for the Surrey-Cloverdale riding.

Sturko, a former spokesperson for the RCMP, won the Surrey South seat in a by-election in 2022. In June this year, she crossed the floor to the BC Conservatives, becoming the party’s fourth sitting MLA.

Early in the campaign period, it was decided that she would run for Surrey-Cloverdale and broadcasting professional Brent Chapman would run for the Conservative Party in Surrey South.

Chapman’s candidacy would prove controversial when a series of hateful and incendiary comments he made online were unearthed in recent weeks.

Early election results Saturday night indicate that Sturko has secured a seat in Surrey-Cloverdale. Incumbent BC NDP candidate Mike Starchuk appears to have won 45.68 per cent of the vote.
