A large structure fire broke out in Abbotsford Tuesday afternoon, forcing the closure of local roads and requiring the help of the provincial wildfire service.

The City of Abbotsford tells 1130 NewsRadio that at around 4:20 p.m., Abbotsford Fire Rescue Services (AFRS) received reports of a fire along Sumas Mountain Road near Dawson Road.

“With heavy smoke visible from quite a distance, crews arrived to find two large structures on the property fully involved,” city officials said.

City fire crews worked with the BC Wildfire Service on the scene to contain the fire.

“All residents were safely out of the structures on arrival. There are currently no known injuries. Emergency Support Services have been called to assist the residents of the property, if required,” the city said.

According to the BCWS, a wildfire initial attack crew and a response officer responded to the blaze, along with a helicopter.

As of 7:30 p.m., the City of Abbotsford says the fire is contained.

“Thermal imaging is being used to ensure all hot spots are extinguished and cannot rekindle. Crews will remain on site this evening.”

The Abbotsford Police Department says Sumas Mountain Road is closed in both directions between Dawson and Foxglove Lane.

There is no known time of reopening.
