Burnaby RCMP remembers constable on anniversary of her death
The Burnaby RCMP remembered Const. Shaelyn Yang on the second anniversary of her death Friday, saying her influence lives on.
“We miss Shae every day, but we continue to reflect on her legacy and the positive impact she has left on our community,” Mounties said in a post on social media.
The RCMP also says it presented a cheque to Pacific Assistance Dogs (PADS) — an organization that partners certified assistance dogs with people with disabilities — in Yang’s memory, with money raised by the Const. Shaelyn Yang Legacy Committee.
31-year-old Yang was fatally stabbed Oct. 18, 2022, during an altercation while she was helping Burnaby city workers evict an unhoused man living in a tent in Broadview Park.
Cst. Yang lived in Richmond and started her career working as a volunteer part-time with Richmond RCMP’s Victim Services before becoming a police officer in 2019, according to a statement from BC RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald issued on the day she was killed.
Jongwon Ham was charged with first-degree murder on day after Yang’s death.
