The new Capstan Station opens in Richmond, B.C. on Friday December 20, 2024.

Friday was a big day for commuters in Richmond.

The brand new Capstan SkyTrain Station along the Canada Line is now open, and eager commuters couldn’t wait to check it out.

“It’s really nice. I haven’t seen so many vending machines in a station before, especially the orange juice machine is really fascinating,” one rider told The Leader Spirit.

“We’ve seen them in Europe, but really the first one in Canada.”

“I love it, and I love how much everyone else loves it,” another rider said.

“It’s great energy here.”

The new station, which took three years to build, is located between Aberdeen and Bridgeport stations.

Capstan was slated to open in 2023, but TransLink says it was delayed due to unstable soil conditions and condo construction nearby.

The transit authority says the station will service the growing Capstan Village area of Richmond.

“Up to 30,000 customers ride this section of the Canada Line each weekday, and Capstan Station is a unique addition,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn.

“It features a larger concourse and waiting area for better customer experience, dual sets of escalators, and space for future retail.”

The $62 million project was jointly funded by TransLink and the City of Richmond along with local developers.
