Child in hospital after being hit by car in New Westminster
A five-year-old child was taken to hospital after being hit by a car Friday afternoon, the New Westminster Police Department has confirmed.
Police say the child was struck at the intersection of 20th Street and 8th Avenue around 4 p.m.
“It appears as if the child has no significant injury,” Sgt. Andrew Leaver told 1130 NewsRadio.
New West PD says the driver remained at the scene. All contributing factors are under investigation.
Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to call police at 604-525-5411. Anyone who feels like they would benefit from the New Westminster PD Victim Assistance Unit can call 604-529-2525.
“Our Victim Assistance Unit is available to support anyone that might be affected by this,” Leaver said. “I understand when children are involved, especially when the children are victims, that’s sometimes hard to take, and our thoughts are with the family of this child right now.”
The intersection was closed after the incident. Police say traffic has reopened on 20th street, but 8th Avenue will remain blocked from 20th Street to 22nd Street.
