A Chilliwack man has been sentenced to life in prison for the killing of another man in a Mission home in late 2022.

On Dec. 14 of that year, the Mission RCMP was called to a home on 4th Avenue near Mary Street around 7 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a man who had been stabbed.

Despite the efforts of first responders, 64-year-old Holbert Tew died on the scene.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in to investigate and quickly identified Matthew Bauer of Chilliwack as a suspect.

In early 2023, Bauer, who was 27 at the time, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder the following day.

IHIT issued an update Friday, saying Bauer was found guilty in February and received sentencing Thursday.

“Mr. Bauer was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 12 years,” investigators announced.

“Our thoughts are with Mr. Tew’s family and friends as the court proceedings come to an end.”
