Cranbrook RCMP makes arrest after sextortion incidents involving young teens

An RCMP detachment in the Kootenays says a person has been arrested in relation to what it previously called “online activity” that targeted young teenagers.

Last month, the Cranbrook RCMP issued a public warning, saying girls between the ages of 11 and 14 are being targeted through social media by an “unknown man who is soliciting intimate images in exchange for money, drugs or alcohol.”

In an update to the case on Wednesday, Mounties say a 20-year-old Cranbrook man has been arrested in relation to the alleged incidences, along with other online offences.

Police say he has been released on conditions awaiting his next court appearance.

Mounties are now reminding the public of the importance of parents educating themselves and their children in order to stay safe online.

“It’s important for you as a parent to be aware of your teen’s digital life, and to work with him/her on setting boundaries, acting responsibly, and staying safe online,” Staff Sgt. Kris Clark said in March. “While this particular situation appears to be targeting girls, boys are just as susceptible to sexual extortion.”

“There is a common misconception that sexual predators live somewhere in the dark corners of the internet when they’re actually alive and well on social media and in chat groups. Anywhere someone can interact with your child, like social media apps or online games, presents an opportunity. Engage with your kids so they know how to be safe online,” Clark added at the time.
