The person who died after a vehicle crashed through a multi-storey parkade at the University of British Columbia Wednesday was a Delta firefighter, The Leader Spirit has confirmed.

Firefighter Marc Jubinville died at the scene after the car he was in crashed through a barrier on the second floor of the Thunderbird Parkade, with the vehicle falling to the ground below.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Service Assistant Chief Keith Stewart tells The Leader Spirit they responded to the incident.

“We didn’t know at the time but later we were alerted that it was a Delta firefighter,” Stewart said.

According to investigators, a large slab of concrete from the barrier was “hanging precariously above the now-vertical black sedan,” something Vancouver Fire crews confirmed Wednesday.

The crews worked to free the person trapped inside the vehicle, but noted at the time there were “a significant amount of challenges and hazards to overcome” — including a structural component, as well as a “battery charging container that basically fed vehicle chargers throughout the building.”

Delta Fire Rescue Chief Guy McKintuck shared a statement online about Jubinville’s passing.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of one of our own,” said McKintuck. “He served our community with an unwavering commitment to protecting lives and keeping everyone safe. He not only possessed the skills and bravery of a first responder, but his presence and comradery made him a source of comfort with many on the Delta Fire team.”

Delta Mayor George Harvie issued a statement regarding Jubinville’s passing.

“Marc’s exceptional service and bravery in protecting our community are commendable, and his unexpected passing is a profound tragedy not just for Delta Fire, but for our entire community,” he said.

“In these difficult times, our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and all his colleagues at Delta Fire. Let us come together to honour and remember Firefighter Jubinville’s selfless dedication and bravery.”

McKintuck says flags at City Hall, Fire Halls, and Delta facilities will be lowered to half-mast in Jubinville’s honour.
