Detour in effect after crash blocks access to Tsawwassen BC Ferries terminal

A traffic detour is now in effect after a crash closed a section of Highway 17 in both directions, blocking access to the Tsawwassen BC Ferries terminal.

As of just before 1:30 p.m., the road remains closed between Salish Sea Drive and Tsawwassen Drive.

DriveBC says the detour runs from Salish Sea Drive to Blue Heron Way, and then to Tsawwassen Drive.

“Expect major delays getting to and from the terminal,” DriveBC posted on social media.

“Watch for crews directing traffic.”

Delta Police Department Staff Sgt. Mike Whiteley tells 1130 NewsRadio the collision was between an SUV and a motorcyclist.

“There appear to be serious injuries, and the motorcyclist is on his way to be treated at hospital,” he said.

“[The stretch of highway will] be closed between Salish Sea and Tsawwassen Drive until BC Highways gets on scene and determines what kind of closure they need to conduct their investigation.”

One caller to the station, Fiona, says multiple emergency vehicles were on the scene.

“They are making everyone park at Tsawwassen Mills mall and walk to the ferry terminal carrying their luggage,” she said.

This is a developing story.
