Police in Maple Ridge are investigating a crash on 102 Avenue where a driver of a pickup truck struck a 13-year-old girl on Monday.

The Ridge Meadows RCMP says that the 13-year-old pedestrian was crossing northbound on a marked crosswalk at 242B Street just before 8 a.m., when she was struck.

The male driver, who was travelling eastbound on 102 Avenue at the time of the collision, remained on the scene.

The BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) transported the girl to the hospital.

“Paramedics provided emergency medical care to one patient who was transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition,” said Brian Twaites, BCEHS spokesperson.

The Ridge Meadows RCMP Frontline, which is currently investigating the incident, says several factors are being looked at, including weather and road conditions.

Roads in the area were closed earlier on Monday but have since reopened.

Witnesses are asked to contact the police at 604-463-6251.

Police say that the crash is a reminder to use extra caution on the roads during the winter.

“Drivers and pedestrians are once again reminded to take extra precautions on our roadways, especially during this wet weather and during darker periods of the day when there is even less visibility,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Operations Officer Insp. Martin Guay.

“Drivers need to drive relative to current conditions and pay extra attention in areas where there may be increased foot traffic. Pedestrians are reminded to dress to be seen and make eye contact with drivers before safely entering the roadway.”
