Vancouver fire crews say a blaze in East Vancouver has left eight people displaced.

On Tuesday afternoon, Assistant Chief Keith Stewart says crews responded to a call at a single-room occupancy (SRO) building on Powell Street.

Upon arrival, Stewart says crews observed smoke billowing from the front of the structure on the fourth floor.

They later discovered the source of the fire was a unit on the fourth floor.

Stewart says the fire was a “contents fire,” meaning items inside the suite had caught fire.

After fighting the fire, Stewart says plenty of water and smoke damage was left in the main unit and nearby areas.

He adds nobody was injured and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Emergency Social Services were called to assist those displaced by the blaze.
