Evening ferries cancelled after Vancouver area wind warnings

Strong winds around coastal B.C. have forced the cancellation of some evening ferries between Vancouver and Vancouver Island Monday.

Environment Canada says a wind warning is in effect for Vancouver, the Lower Mainland, the Sunshine Coast, the Southern Gulf Islands and East Vancouver Island starting late Monday.

1130 NewsRadio meteorologist Carl Lam says southeasterly winds, at speeds of of 70 to 90 kilometres per hour, will develop Monday evening and ease off Tuesday morning.

“The rain that’s expected to continue will pick up about five to 10 millimetres across Metro Vancouver,” said Lam. “It is going to be that wind-whipped rain across the region tonight.”

BC Ferries says the 5 p.m. sailings will be the last ones between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay — along with the 5:45 p.m. sailings between Tsawwassen and Duke Point.

Some sailings between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay could also be at risk of being cancelled.
