Fed election ‘most consequential’ in Canadian history: Eby

British Columbia Premier David Eby is mincing no words when it comes to the importance of the upcoming federal election at the end of the month.

Speaking to media on Thursday morning, Eby says the April 28 election is “the most consequential” one in Canadian history.

Eby believes it’s because of the trade war kicked off by United States President Donald Trump.

He adds that whoever wins, they need to address two things immediately.

“One is free trade across Canada, by the summer. This is achievable. All the provinces are on side. We have legislation here in B.C. We can do it. We can move quickly. We need that federal convening to make it happen,” he explained.

“The second is support for workers who are affected in B.C.; it’s workers in the softwood lumber industry. In Ontario, it’s auto workers,” he said.

Eby explains that the impacts on workers are not just limited to “just B.C. or just Quebec,” but are national issues requiring a national response.

“Every Canadian … is approaching this ballot and this ballot question, understanding the seriousness of the question ahead of them, the direction of the country, and I encourage people to get out and vote, regardless of which party they support,” he said.

Eby says Trump’s tariffs are casting a long shadow on the election run-up.

“Whoever forms government, whoever the next prime minister is, it’s the most consequential election in a generation. It really determines the direction of our country as a whole,” he reiterated.

“But that prime minister has to pull together all the premiers across Canada,” he explained.
